Style: Console
Model: lowest end i3 version Upgraded: I swapped out the hard drive for 240GB SSD for $80. I recommend you do too.
Product Explanation: Many people viewing this product may be confused as to what it is since it defies traditional labeling. Is it a console or a computer? To effectively answer that question one must understand a level of technical jargon that could deter many non tech-savvy buyers. The Alpha falls between two categories of devices that are closely related enough that explaining exactly where in the middle it falls leads many people to question it’s overall usefullness as a device if they happen to already have a computer or console.
Reason for Purchase: I bought this device because I had neither a windows computer nor a dedicated gaming machine, so the Alpha perfectly took care of both issues for me. The combination of small form factor, hardware specs, and price were the main factors that swayed me toward the Alpha.
REVIEW: Upon opening the box it first hit me how small the Alpha was. After booting up the Alpha I had to set up a bunch of accounts which could be a hassle if you don’t have a mouse/keyboard lying around. After initial usage I realized the hard drive was too slow and switched it out for an SSD which I would highly reccomend to anyone getting this product. After the hard drive swap the Alpha seems blazingly fast not just for boot up but for game loading times as well.
As for performance the Alpha does well. Really well considering it’s size, and whisper quiet too! Most steam games I’ve tried have run above 60 frames per second with graphics quality on high. Console gamers may be unfamiliar with tweaking the graphical settings of a game but generally the games will automatically choose settings that are appropriate for the hardware so even some more demanding games that can’t run with quality settings set to max will still run without any appreciable difference.
The most demanding game I’ve tested was Metro Last Light which seemed fine at first but then suffered from slow frame rates and jaggies after a few minutes of play, after some tweaking in the setting I found a “Physx” checkbox in the settings that when turned off made all the frame rate problems dissappear. Other than Metro all the games I’ve played have performed with no tweaking required.
It should be noted, that most games I play are less graphically demanding indie games, so if you want to play all the latest and greatest most uber graphically demanding games I would not suggest getting this product. However, if you can get by with only maxing out graphics quality 75% of the time then you’ll certainly find the Alpha to be respectable performance wise.
When it comes to price the Alpha is actually a steal. You can do you’re best to compete with the Alpha on the price/preformance scale by building you’re own computer but you will probably fail and you will certainly fail at getting it at the form factor it is. As for console price comparisons I’d argue the Alpha is cheaper in the long run. You don’t have to pay for online services on the Alpha and games are always on sale on steam. After 2 years you’ve already made your money back for sure.
Final Words: If you’re in the market for a small form factor windows computer that is powerful, well priced, and can play some games, look no further, this is your clear winner.
Update: After using the Alpha for about 3 months now I can confirm that I still love it, it has performed flawlessly.
I am a software engineer…have been building my own PCs for ~15 years now.I bought this for my pre-teen as a replacement for his old PC.It’s great! Here’s why: 1.No bloatware!Usually commercial PCs are loaded with bloatware and you need to clean them before you can even use them. The only thing I had to uninstall was Windows Media Player (slows down boot) and this is a Windows problem….not a bloatware or Dell/Alienware problem. 2.Best bang for your buck on the market 3.Packaged driver updates via AlphaUI
The AlphaUI kinda sucks. When you click it, it will log you out of Windows, then log you in as the AlphaUI user, then load the UI.Not only is this a bad user experience, but the two accounts know nothing about each other! So any data you save under your account (like saved Steam games), AlphaUI will know nothing about them.My solution for this was to delete the AlphaUIicon from my kid’s user account’s desktop. He just always uses the desktop, not AlphaUI.I am trying to raise an intelligent human, not a console junkie. :)The only downside is updating the AlphaUI is how the box upgrades the drivers….so I sneak in his room once a month, load AlphaUI from the start menu, update AlphaUI, boot back to desktop.
The CPU, RAM, and HD are all easily upgradeable. In my desktop testing, the HD is the bottleneck.Drop an SSD in and this thing would sing.
I loved this system it’s small but packs a powerful punch I was able to play most games on steam at med/high settings 60fps. It was very easy to upgrade I knew absolutely nothing about computers before buying this and was able to upgrade the ram and hard drive easily myself. This system is also good for web browsing and most everyday desktop stuff. Now the bad I had the system for less than a year and a half and it died on me twice within that time the first time it was a warranty fix by Dell 4 months after that It got the dreaded YLOD a problem that’s plaguing a lot of alienware alphas and alienware steam machines. (Google alienware YLOD). I called Dell’s technical support and since my alpha was not longer under warranty they were going to charge me 260 bucks to try and repair it. And after it’s repaired your only given a month warranty, this kind of reminds me of the red ring of death but at least Microsoft repaired your system for free and then gave you a three year warranty against the RROD on top of that. It’s apparent that Dell is going to do nothing to rectify this problem. So I just ended up scrapping the Alpha and buying a gaming PC. I guess fitting all that tech in such a small form factor comes at a price.

Great little hybrid PC/Console. It feels more like a PC, you can tell when the custom UI loads there are Windows processes running in the background. Price is a bit much but I find myself playing on this more then my PS4 or xBox One. What really made this special was when I put in a SSD and upgraded the RAM to 16GB (Max). Boot-up before SSD was painstaking and would take forever and really showed a lot of the PC aspects of this device when UI would boot. After the SSD upgrade it boots so fast you can hardly tell anything is running in the background.
Upgrading it was a breeze and you don't lose warranty doing so. The game selection is far more vast then the current Gen consoles and whatever you can't run through the Custom UI Steam you can run on desktop. So if I get bored of playing the newest PC games you can run those wonderful emulators or if your game doesn't run through Steam just switch to desktop. the Alpha UI has an option to add items that are not Steam related, however I'm not sure how they decide what you can add because I've installed DCUO to desktop but it seems on the UI its not showing everything as I can't add DCUO to the UI.
If you don't currently have a PC this would make a good way to utilize doing both. I must say though if your TV is a far distance away and you don't have 20/20 vision like myself at 1080p its hard to operate tasks like browsing web pages and such, since the fonts are so small. I suppose though you could tweak it a little bit and use Windows or other programs magnify to help with this, but thankfully I have a small i3 PC that does this for me. In any case its an eye strain at a distance.
The ability to change the LED colors on the Alien head and the side of the machine is a nice add-on. You can keep them the same or mix and match the colors as you see fit. Perhaps you don't like the lights?, you can turn them off. Even with the lights off when you hit the power button the machine lets you know its booting up by a flashing light.
No optical drive?, not really a problem as a simple external USB CD/DVD drive will work in desktop mode. I think making it without a optical drive was a good touch since it gives them the ability to have a smaller factory form. Dell/Alienware has also been pretty good about rolling out updates for games that are not working like "Dragon Age: Inquisition" which is now fully playable.
I do wish other controllers where usable natively. I'm not knocking the 360 controller because its actually pretty comfortable however a PS4 controller I prefer. I've tried ControllerMAX dongle and its usable but the bluetooth range is pretty weak and I can't get the far distance that I need without the provided 360 controller and adapter. If you do play pretty close to this machine and you dislike 360 controller then ControllerMAX or a similar dongle might be what remedies your needs.
Sure the purchase price and the cost of upgrades you could probably buy 2-3 (depending on how far you go with it) PS4s/xBox Ones but All-in-all, I'm happy with this machine and what it offers, that's what its really all about.
My computer had broke down, and I needed to get a replacement that could still play the games from my steam account. I saw this, and was a little bit weary due to the low price of the machine, but it sounded perfect. So, I got it and am not at all disappointed. It's small: About the size of a Wii in length and depth but a little wider. It's black, so blends in with other consoles and has pretty lights, that you can configure to whatever color you want it to be.
Or you can put it on your desk, and use it as a low cost gaming computer by hooking a USB mouse and keyboard into it, because it does have a windows and console mode.Windows mode takes you to your desktop, where you can browse or use other windowsprograms like chrome, or skype, or play non-steam games..or use facebook and play facebook games if you are into that.
The system is very powerful for the cost. I haven't played a game yet that didn't run on it./..i'm sure there are some, I just haven't found one. I have played Witcher 3, Grand Theft Auto 5, Watch Dogs, Alien: Isolation, wolfenstein: The Old Blood, The vanishing of Ethan Carter, H1Z1 and SubNautica just to name a few. All those title ran with no problem and played smoothly. For the cost? It's a bargain!
I had heard complaints that the system runs loudly, but I haven't noticed it at all. The fan in my console is whisper quiet, and in fact I had to put my ear to the console just to make sure the fans were actually working. This console/PC hybrid worked out much better than I expected.
EDIT: When I purchased this, it was 600 new, not the insane 1k people are trying to milk out of this. At 600 it's a bargain, at these stupid inflated prices you are better off getting a desktop computer.

UPDATE 12/9/2015: Dell fixed the issue by replacing the motherboard which took about a week to fix.It worked fine for a day and the same problem returned within 24 hours where the motherboard bootup screen hangs at the Alienware logo.See attached picture to see where it hangs.
Original review: Everything is great about this computer until it one day got stuck at the Alienware bootup screen.Pressing F2 (setup) or F12 (boot options) had no effect and still the screen was stuck.Google up "Alienware alpha stuck" and you will see a youtube video showing this issue. It's a common problem and requires you to ship back the product to Dell for them to fix.
The Dell tech support had me open up the computer and take out the hard drive and RAM to see if it was the issue. They weren't the issue. The Dell tech believes it's the motherboard that is fried.
I have had this product for only a week and am really disappointed.Otherwise, everything about it is awesome for the size.Upgrading to Windows 10 was a breeze and playing games on it is great.
