I just bought my nephew who is going to college an HP Stream 13 for $230. Beautiful and powerful computer, but it took me 90 minutes to remove all the stickers and all the crapware & adware.I still need to offload the recovery partition to a flash disk to recover the SSD storage. It has a total of 32 GB SSD storage so every bit counts.I’m also waiting for a 64 GB MicroSD card http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IVPU7AO so I can expand the storage.
Removing the crapware and adware took 2 hours plus another hour to install Windows update.I removed all the browser extensions and add-ons in IE and then installed Chrome. Then I installed CCleaner and removed McAfee anti-virus so that I can just use the free Microsoft AV. Also removed a bunch of bloatware like Cisco wireless networking utilities like LEAP and Apple Bonjour. Removed the Realtek card reader software since it slows the card reader down. Then downloaded fresh Realtek card reader driver and manually installed the driver without using their setup program.
UPDATE – I had to remove all the HP tools (support and registration) as well.They were intermittently hammering the CPU to 100% and other people in HP forums were complaining about this problem.Once uninstalled, the CPU usage problems went away.Something else that caused some mildly high CPU usage during media playback was the Realtek DTS audio processing service and I’ve disabled that and the system performs better.It was not needed for playback quality and it was actually detrimental to audio recording quality.
The thing that slowed me down was that I had to gather my nephew’s personal info to create a Microsoft account for him. It was mandatory since this is the free version of MS Windows 8.1 (with Bing). But the MS Account allows him to use MS Office online for free so it’s worth setting up.I also had to carefully remove 3 stickers on the keyboard rest. Intel sticker was tilted. Now it’s a beautiful clean system and it boots very fast and loads everything fast. It handles most computing tasks just fine and now I’m loathed to give this away.
Some people will complain about the 2GB of RAM which is not expandable, but I never have any problems with 2GB RAM because I don’t leave a 20 browser tabs open.You’re not going to use this laptop for 3D intensive gaming or 3D rendering so the RAM shouldn’t be an issue.I have a desktop computer with 8 GB of RAM for running games and virtual machines and content production and no one should expect the HP Stream 13 to perform this role.It runs fewer than 10 web browser tabs just fine and it’s extremely snappy running Microsoft Office Online or Google apps.
I ran a Youtube 1080P on Chrome browser. Google is screwing all of us now by forcing their VP9 codec on us which forces this computer to use software video decoding. This dual-core CPU is pegged at 100% utilization and forced to overclock to 2.58 GHz and it will still hiccup if a youtube ad shows up.Of course this is just chewing up the battery.By comparison, I tested a 1080P H.264 .MP4 video downloaded from Google and the CPU hovered around 8% during smooth playback. Google needs to shove their VP8 & VP9 codec where the sun don’t shine.But thank goodness for “Magic Actions for YouTube” (a Chrome plugin) letting me disable Google’s VP9 HTML5 crap.Now Chrome runs Youtube in flash mode with H.264 hardware decoding and the CPU hovers around 20%.Here’s a screenshot of the CPU pegged at 100% with VP9 software decode […].Here’s the CPU hovering at 20% using Flash mode with H.264 hardware decode […].
I’ve been hammering on this system with tests for over two hours. The Intel N2840 2.16 GHz processor is being forced to burst to 2.58 GHz from all the work I’m throwing at it. Windows Update is hammering the IO and CPU. The brightness level is even set to 60% and the battery level still reads 79% with 4 hours 24 minutes remaining.
After all the tweaks and cleanup I’ve done, the slim HP Stream 13 3.42 lb laptop is running smooth as butter. The 13.3″ 1366×768 non-glare matte screen is the perfect compromise between viewabiliy and compactness.Would be even nicer if HP could sell us a 1920×1080 13.3″ screen but probably not at the $230 price point.Another small gripe is that the bezel is a little bigger than I’d like.
The Stream 13 has a 720P webcam, but I wouldn’t even call it 360P quality. It’s incredibly grainy using indoor lighting, but what were you expecting for a $230 laptop?It’s certainly not going to look like the camera on the MacBook Pro. Get yourself a $66 Logitech C920 which has awesome image quality and 1080P hardware encoding if you want a nice webcam.Even a $29 720P webcam will look leaps and bounds better.
On the audio output side, the HP Stream 13 has good sound output from the TRRS jack.It can drive my large 808 headphones with authority.By comparison, my Lenovo ThinkPad T430 business laptop couldn’t push my 808s at all!The audio recording on the other hand stinks in the default setting.The integrated microphone sucks like most integrated microphones on laptops. It is very laggy because of all the noise cancellation algorithms they apply to it. The recorded sound (using Audacity) is noise free but it is extremely unnatural due to excessive noise reduction.I don’t like the recorded sound at all.
UPDATE – After disabling the DTS Realtek audio processing, the playback quality was still just as good.Recording with the internal microphone actually improved a lot.The internal microphone in the HP Stream 13 actually isn’t too shabby.It is surprisingly usable quality for VoIP or Video Calling.
The Stream 13 also has a 3.5mm TRRS phone connector port for headphones and earbuds with microphones. That means you can use the same earbuds with mic that you use with your smartphone. The problem is that while it sounds a lot more natural than the integrated microphone, it’s a faint yet noisy signal. The input volume was set to 100% with a 10 dB (fake software preamp) boost and it’s still only reaching 20% peak sound levels in Audacity.My Nexus 4 and Samsung S4 on the other hand produce extremely good quality recordings with the same earbuds or headphones with microphones.To put this in context, my Lenovo ThinkPad T430 from work has the same audio recording quality problems with the integrated mic and TRRS port.
If you want to work around these sound recording issues, buy yourself a $34 Samson GoMic.It’s the best money you’ll ever spend on a USB microphone.The other option is that you can get a bluetooth headphone with microphone since the HP Stream 13 has bluetooth capability.
The trackpad on the HP Stream 13 is large and usable.It supports gestures like two-finger scrolling.But if you really want a good experience, buy a bluetooth mouse and use the integrated bluetooth in the Stream 13.
Lastly, here are the disk performance results for the internal 32 GB SSD storage. It’s one of the slowest SSDs on the market, but it’s still around 15 times faster than a normal hard drive when it comes to small file transfers. […]
Conclusion: This is a superb mobility laptop for the money, but only if you remove all the crapware and apply all the optimizations I performed above.

Here we go: This is the 4th laptop I’ve ordered on Amazon and finally I will keep one. The previous ones were Toshiba, Dell and Asus. Here is what I learned: There isn’t much of a difference between a $500 laptop and this $229 dollar one. Ok, the other ones had touch screens, but the quality of the color, sharpness, and brightness weren’t any better than this one. For $229 it will serve it’s purpose to help me through grad school writing papers and doing research on the go. The first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box was how slippery the plastic was. It has a matte finish that has literally no grip to it. One nice thing is the weight. Even though the plastic isn’t the highest quality, the laptop has a pretty solid feel to it. However, the palm rests are not very solid and have a cheap hollow feel to them. Don’t expect to play any games on this laptop or do much multimedia activities. It could barely keep up with streaming video from Hulu Plus. My internet connection speed is fast, but the video capabilities aren’t that great. I bought it for research and writing and it will serve it’s purpose as well as a $500 laptop. I have to give HP credit for making a pretty good budget laptop that is very affordable. If you read some reviews, study the specs, and have realistic expectations, then this may be a good choice. If you want something fast for gaming and multimedia functions then I’d stay away. Web browsing and office apps are what it’s suitable for. Update–don’t bother trying to have multiple tabs open in your web browser. This laptop doesn’t have the processing power or memory to handle multitasking like that. I ended up getting a Windows blue screen of death as it crashed the laptop. *Let me stress this again: It is only suitable for office apps, checking email, and basic computing needs. If you want to watch Youtube videos & play games, get something else. **Update: The keyboard is actually the best part of this laptop. I do quite a bit of writing, so I’m actually impressed with the keyboard. There is just enough feedback from the keys and not over excessive travel up/down when you press the keys. I’m not so crazy about the touch pad–it’s a little bit "all over the place." I just don’t like the feel of the touch pad and the left/right click buttons feel cheap when you press them.
Please note:this laptop cannot easily update to Windows 10 due to the lack of storage space after the initial setup process / downloading of Windows 8.1 updates.After all Windows 8.1 updates have been downloaded, you will only have roughly 4 GB storage space remaining for documents, pictures, and music on the internal storage.

**Disclaimer – If this laptop updated to the free Windows 10 as advertised, I would have given it 5 stars.In my opinion, I think most users who use this product for a few months with Windows 8.1 and then later decide to update to Windows 10…would be frustrated with having to backup all their files and then resort to a manual / grueling process for updating to Windows 10 by manually deleting the recovery partition.

It is tempting to harp on the things that you might not like about this, so let's get them out of the way.
A "tablet" without a detatchable keyboard might not be everyone's cup of tea. It's bulkier in the hand and lap than you want. If you want a tablet, you should buy a tablet.
The size is a little big for an 11" notebook, enough so that it might not fit in the sleeve or case that another 11" notebook fits in, so be careful there. Make sure it fits.
And if you are going to do anything remotely "serious" with a computer, this is not going to cut it with only 2G RAM and 32G storage. Lastly, setup was really clunky. I had to hard shut-down the computer twice before it would complete.
I would give it 5 stars because of the value I'm about to detail, but I've removed 2 stars. The reason why is at the end of the review.
FIrst, that slightly bigger size makes the keyboard as easy to use as it is on my 13" laptop. And most 11" laptops are just plain useless. That said, I find all non-Mac trackpads to be too hard to use, and this is no exception.
But mostly... the price of this, considering you get a touch-screen and a case robust enough to withstand moderate use for a while, is insanely great. I didn't expect at this price to find 3 USB ports, HDMI, SD Card slot and even wired Ethernet. The value they have packed into this is remarkable.
Many people who an iPad or tablet, then end up using it with a keyboard all the time, who are looking to do work and email and web surfing, would imho be way better served by one of these, probably for way less money. I have an iPad, but if I'm surfing or doing light typing, I'd rather use this in a heartbeat.
If you're content-creating (audio/video/graphics) this is not the computer for you. It's too small in size and in memory and storage space. If you are "consuming content" and doing general email, word docs, and stuff like that, this is just perfect.
If you have bad eyesight, an 11" screen is too small, but that is not a defect of this computer.
One last thing, I'm normally a Mac user, and I am not going to switch for my daily driver any time soon... but... Apple has stubbornly refused to add a touch-screen feature to the Mac line. Even a cheap little computer like this is a great lesson that this is a mistake. The touch screen comes in so handy. Apple, are you listening? I know it wasn't your idea to do that on a "real" computer, but do it... soon...

When you first get this computer out of the box, it has a free upgrade to windows 10 sticker on it.
You can not install Windows 10 on this computer as shipped to you if you install even one or two little programs or run Windows Update. It does not NEARLY have enough space available.If you restore the computer to factory defaults, it frees up the space you need, and you can install. So... IF YOU WANT TO RUN WINDOWS 10 ON THIS MACHINE INSTALL IT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE.
I will update again as I test this under Windows 10 (Home Edition)
To start, I did exactly what other reviewers said to do and downloaded Windows 10 first thing. It was painless (other than not being able to play with my new computer while it loaded) and there was plenty of room. Afterwards however, there was only about 4GB of free space on the computer, so I went and got a 128GB SD card. I like that you can go into the settings to make everything automatically save to the SD card. (but as a side note, I've noticed that the SD card pops out semi-easily - not that it falls out, it just sits halfway out so that the computer doesn't notice its there) NOTE: THERE IS NO CD/DVD DRIVE. Most new laptops like this don't have the optical drive so this is not against this device in particular. I was unaware at first that this was common and it almost made me decide not to get this. But I got it anyways because you can always get an external optical drive for as cheap as $15 or $20 (although I hear you get what you pay for in those cases). The computer is lightweight and very easy to carry around. The color is beautiful and anyone I show it to loves it and threatens to steal it. Downloading the Word, Excel, etc. was easy too. I have not attempted the cloud drive yet. I'm very accustomed to my 10inch Google Nexus tablet, and its' responsiveness so at times this computer seems a little slow or laggish. But that might just be me being impatient. The Keyboard feels amazing and overall it feels just like any normal keyboard. The fact that this is only about $200 makes this a great buy. I absolutley love it and don't regret buying it. Even thought I sit at a computer all day for work, I look for excuses to get on my laptop when I get home. I wish I would have bought it back when I was in college.
I bought this computer because I was looking for something light that I would be able to take to college. I mostly surf the internet and use Microsoft word. This little guy has been perfect so far. I did have problems updating to windows 10 because it says that it doesn't have enough storage space to update. So I inserted a SD card (which does stick out about 1/2" but does not affect me) and it upgraded perfectly fine. I was also looking for a computer with "clicky" keys, and this has them! I love them because it reminds me of a mechanical keyboard but I know many people want it to be completely silent. I was originally going to purchase the original HP stream in the pink color but I am so happy I got the convertible instead!! I wasn't sure I would really use the touch screen but I find myself using it ALL the time. I was also looking at a few chromebooks but I decided against them because if you want to use Microsoft Word you have to have internet access. And you know how us college students like to procrastinate and write papers in the car 10 minutes before we go to class lol! The bottom of the computer does get a little hot but it doesn't bother me too much. I was also concerned with the battery life this computer will have. I have been on Youtube, surfing the web, and on word for about 6 hours and I am just now at half battery. Speed was another big deciding factor. The more I researched for computers in this price range it seemed like they pretty much all had the same specs. In my experience this computer loads webpages in about 2 seconds which is plenty fast for me. My only little pet peeve with this computer is the glare on the screen. If you are in an area with a teeny bit of sunlight there is a glare which makes me have to move the screen all around to get it in the exact position to where I can see it. But, this takes me like 4 seconds so it's not a big deal for me. Also the keys are doing a really great job with keeping up with my typing speed! So all in all I recommend this laptop if you are a college student. Personally, I think this is an AMAZING value for what you this super handy product! :)

DO NOT BUY - this X2, or for that matter any HP product.I bought 2 of these on Black Friday 2014 (1.5 years ago). Story 1: The first one died today. First, the keyboard is not recognized, checked all settings, restarted - still no keyboard. When I shut down, the unit will not turn back on - at all.Cost me a paid install of the MSOffice Suite, 3 days ago. Story 2: Today, I opened the 2nd and noticed the touch screen bulged/warped out of its back casing.Called HP Tech Support - to repair/replace they will charge me $230. Out of warranty I get it, but its a (absolute) manufacturer defect. I thought, my return (I am sure) will help their R&D, etc. The Tech Assist Rep insisted, it will cost me $230 outright, upon their receipt of the unit/I have to pay ship back.Please check photos - I have a witness.First, it was a warped screen, until we heard a 'pop' and a component inside inflated it seems - causing for the screen to separate from the back casing. This was stored in a room where 5 other computers had been operating (ON), more time than this is stored. DO NOT BUY ANY HP PRODUCT -- they are DEFECTIVELY designed and manufactured.I am concerned what's inflating is the battery, known to catch FIRE.
I had an IRULU W1000 32GB tablet that I bought from Amazon for $240. That tablet was great, but the power switch design was flawed and it failed within a month. (IRULU has since changed their product design, so this is no longer an issue.) I was originally going to purchase another IRULU tablet, but then I came across this for $210 for the same 32GB of storage. I read the reviews, and I was nervous about it at first, but I figured if it did have the problems people were mentioning in their reviews I could send it back to Amazon for a refund and just get another IRULU like I had planned on. The day I received the tablet, I powered it up and immediately discovered that the keyboard wasn't working, which was one of the complaints listed in the reviews I'd read. I was upset. But then I reseated the tablet in the keyboard dock and never had another keyboard problem again. Yes, the keyboard isn't the greatest, but I type hard anyway so it's just a matter of remembering to type like I would on a regular keyboard instead of trying to treat the thing with kid gloves. The one issue I've had, which may not be related to the keyboard at all, is that sometimes the first character you type in a field never actually appears. It's like the tablet wasn't ready for your input or something. But if you wait half a second before you start typing, this doesn't happen.
Performance-wise, this is a budget tablet and you should expect budget tablet performance... but you don't get that. You get much better than you would expect at this price point. The quad-core Bay Trail CPU in this thing just hauls... and coupled with a flash memory storage device, it's more than sufficient for most light-duty tasks you would do on a tablet. Is it a Surface Pro 3? No... so don't try to use it like one. You're likely not going to get good handwriting performance on this thing without an active stylus, it's not going to run a bunch of applications at once... but it will do light-duty web browsing, games, etc. It also works great as a Steam streaming device, so if you have a computer running Steam, you can stream your games to the tablet and it will work just fine. Also, it has front-facing speakers and the screen is crystal clear, so it's great for watching movies on. You also get a full-size USB port which is advertised as being USB 3.0, but I haven't tested that yet... regardless, the addition of a full-size USB port means you have a wide range of accessories you can connect to the tablet, such as mice, keyboards, etc. It also has mini-HDMI out as well. In theory, you *could* use this as a light-duty desktop replacement by connecting a USB hub with a mouse and keyboard connected to that, and a monitor via HDMI... but I wouldn't recommend it. What's the point of having a tablet with a touch screen if you're... never going to use the touch screen functionality? One last note: Do yourself a favor and buy at least a 64GB microSD card to throw in this thing to add extra storage space. I believe it will handle up to 128GB... I have a 64GB card in it and it works fine. For $~30, you're not going to beat that cost to triple your storage space on this tablet.
One of the major, MAJOR plusses of this device? The battery life is RIDICULOUS. My previous IRULU tablet lasted maybe four hours, even on standby. This thing will run literally the entire day even under a decent workload. I've gone two days without charging this device numerous times and it still has enough juice to get me through most of the second day before I absolutely have to charge it (assuming I haven't been playing Solitaire on it all day, lol).
Another nice side of this tablet is the way the keyboard and the tablet link up. I've read a number of reviews where people complained about the magnetic keyboard stand and how it doesn't hold the tablet up correctly, etc. From my experience, those people just didn't know what they were doing. I've never had any issues with the stand. The tablet has two magnetic points across the back which you can CLEARLY feel once you position the keyboard's stand against them. After that, don't bang on the touchscreen and expect the magnet to hold... When you're not using the tablet, the keyboard cover is very solidly held against the tablet. It almost feels like a netbook when you have the case closed. The design takes a little getting used to, but I like it.
Bottom line? Yeah, you might get a bum unit. It's always a possibility. And it may not fail right out of the box. There's always that possibility too. So cover yourself: Buy the 1 year warranty with the extra $30 you're saving compared to most of the competitors in this range (assuming you get the 32GB version), and give it a shot. If your unit fails, get a replacement. Because this tablet is good enough to give a second chance.
I bought this notebook to replace an aging Toshiba netbook that I had given away.The main draw for me was that it was compact enough to go anywhere, but could also double as a tablet if I wanted it to.I had had issues with another notebook/tablet hybrid from a company called Nextbook that I had purchased a couple months before.It worked fine for a month, and then went completely dead.I bought it through Walmart.com, and since it was during the holiday season with the extended return policy in effect they took it back and refunded my purchase price, no questions asked, as even though it was under warranty I did not want a replacement.
I bought the HP Pavilion X2 the next day, and got it shipped via Prime.The first one I got had an issue where the machine was not able to find the keyboard.I tried several things and eventually called HP support directly.They diagnosed the problem and gave me several options to remedy the situation.They were very helpful and courteous and helped me immensely.In the end, I chose to return it to Amazon as it seemed to be the quickest way to get a replacement (and I needed one fairly soon, as I planned to use it on a trip).Their hardware support manager (I believe his name is Vijay?) even called me three times to make sure that I was able to get it replaced and that I was satisfied with their service.Where are you going to find that nowadays?I've always liked HP's products and this experience reminded me why.
I went online and requested to return the device, and Amazon shipped me a replacement the same day, even BEFORE they received the defective laptop.When I got the replacement I plugged it in and everything worked exactly as expected.The keyboard works well with the tablet and it's fast enough and powerful enough for my fairly simple needs (web surfing, some Office use, web development).If you're looking for a portable, inexpensive and easy-to-use replacement for a Windows laptop, I'd definitely recommend this machine.
